5 Home Remedies That Ward Off UTIs

A urinary tract infection (UTI) happens when any part of the urinary system (including ureters, urethra, kidneys or bladder) become infected. Although the urinary system is designed to drain wastes and bacteria from the body, it can be overcome by a high volume of bacteria. When this happens, an infection develops. Whether you get UTIs frequently or occasionally, here are five natural UTI prevention remedies you can do at home.  

 

  • Drink Plenty of Water

 

Doctors recommend increasing your water intake if you frequently suffer from UTIs. The theory is that drinking more water will help flush bacteria out of your urinary tract. It’s unknown exactly how much water you need to drink to prevent a UTI, but some doctors recommend getting an additional 1.5 liters per day (that’s about 6 cups).

 

 

  • Take Probiotics

 

Did you know probiotics can help keep harmful bacteria out of your urinary tract? Lactobacilli probiotics are thought to be particularly helpful in fighting UTIs because they:

  • Produce a strong antibacterial (hydrogen peroxide) in your urine
  • Prevent “bad” bacteria from attaching to the cells in your urinary tract
  • Lower the pH of your urine so it’s more hostile to harmful bacteria

In addition to taking probiotic supplements, you can also find all natural ingredients that contain probiotics. Fermented foods and dairy products are a good source of various probiotics.

UTIs often occur after intercourse, so it’s important to practice good hygiene and wash your genital area thoroughly after intercourse. You should also try to urinate immediately before and after sex.

Vitamin C boosts immune system function and is a natural UTI prevention medicine. When it mixes with urine, it forms nitrogen oxides that are harmful to bacteria.

 

  • Take an Over-the-Counter UTI Supplement

 

Take a UTI prevention drink with active ingredients that prevent bacteria from attaching to the urethral wall. For best results, take UTI prevention supplements regularly.
