It’s no surprise that most slip and fall injuries occur in the bathroom. It’s a slippery place with tiles, glossy surfaces and a lot of moisture when you have the shower going. If you’re happily taking a shower and suffer a sudden fall, it can be a disorienting and traumatic experience. You might feel like your normally peaceful home has become a dangerous place. Luckily, there are ways to prevent slip and fall accidents with a few easy tricks.

#1: Install Bars and Rails

It’s hard to keep your balance as you grow older or if there’s too much moisture around. Moisture condenses onto tiles and makes them slippery and allows you less grip. You should have a reliable contractor or plumber install strong rails or bars around your bathroom, especially the shower area. Ideally, these bars should not give way no matter what.

If on the off chance, they have not been installed properly and you do suffer a fall and subsequent injury, you’re liable to claim damages. You should look for a good personal injury lawyer and seek advice. Anyone can slip and fall anytime and lawyers know how to file these liability claims. Toledo Injury Lawyers, for example, have listed the most common injury claims on their website. Injury lawyers have really seen it all, so don’t hesitate to contact them right away.

#2: Put Down Slip-proof Mats

You can easily find strong rubber mats with grips underneath. These are designed to be kept in the bathroom and some even have strong grips for the shower. These mats will ensure that you don’t slip and fall in a rush and even if you have a small slip up, they will prevent you from sustaining a more serious injury. More importantly, if you have a shag or throw rug, throw it right out. Those kinds of rugs don’t have any grip to speak off. Rather, they can raise the chances of a slip and fall injury by a large percent.

#3: Light it Up

Make sure you can adequately see your bathroom at all times. You might pride yourself on your eyesight but you should always err on the side of caution. Install a night light if you don’t want to turn on intrusive or bright lights in the dark. It’s important that you’re always able to see all the surfaces around you.

#4: Don’t Rush

Whenever you’re taking a shower, remember that you don’t need to rush. Even if you have somewhere to be, you should focus on your safety before anything else. Take your time getting in and out of the shower or bathtub. Stay calm and concentrate on your footing. One wrong step could lead you to harm.

#5: Make Sure to Dry

Always make sure your bathroom floor is dry. Even if you see water spilled after you’ve used the area, you should clean it up. Keep a mop handy so you can always wipe away any moisture that can make bathroom floors slick and therefore hazardous zones. You will be able to prevent slip and fall injuries in a much better way if you step out onto a dry and cool surface.
