Most people choose to keep their prom dresses. However, before you can store it properly it needs to be cleaned and all marks need to be removed. If you don’t, the dress is likely to attract a variety of pests which can leave you with a ruined prom dress.
While accidents do happen at prom, the good news is that you can remove the spots and stains from your prom dress. You just need to know how.
Blot First
This rule applies to all fabrics. If something is spilt on your dress then you need a clean white cloth or napkin. You can then dab the spill to remove the excess liquid. Dab several times and then cover the area with a clean cloth It will pull much of the moisture out. The cloth must be white to avoid any colour staining on your dress.
Apply A Stain removing Solution
The exact solution you should use will depend on the nature of the stain. You’ll need to apply a little of the solution to another clean white cloth and then blot the stain repeatedly. As you do this the stain will transfer from your prom dress to the cloth. It does take time and patience.
It’s very important that you don’t rub the stain. This will damage the fibres of your dress and make it much harder to remove it.
The solution you use will depend on the stain you are dealing with:
- Wine, coffee, or tea
You’re most likely to encounter a plant-based stain at your prom as you’ll be drinking something. These types of stains can be lifted surprisingly easily. Mix two drops of dish soap with a tablespoon of vinegar and start dabbing.
- Salad dressings
Salad dressings and other sauces are oil-based and can be stubborn to remove. You’ll want to mix three drops of dish soap with some warm water and start dabbing.
- Sweat, blood, and milk
These are effectively protein-based issues. Your best solution to cure the stain is made from a drop of dish soap mixed with a tablespoon of ammonia.
- Makeup
Getting makeup on your prom dress is one of the most common issues. You’ll want to start by carefully scraping off any excess makeup.
You’ll then need to dab a few drops of rubbing alcohol onto your clean cloth and leave it for several minutes. You can then rinse with clean water and dry from the outer edge inward with a hair dryer.
This should remove the stain. If it doesn’t, wash the area again with 3 drops of dish soap in warm water and repeat the drying process.
