National parks

The Bahamas have many beautiful nature sights to offer. There are lots of national parks that leave the tourists breathless with the wildlife and vegetation.

• Lucayan national park has the largest underwater cave system in the whole world. Diving in the crystal clear waters is prohibited. You can get to know the splendid flora and fauna, or relax on the beach with the tallest sand dunes on the island. The well known Gold Rock beach was featured in the “Pirate of the Caribbean” movies.
• Green’s bay national park is the perfect place for swimming with turtles. Turtles find this place perfect for nesting, and that;s why you will encounter lots of them. Also, this national park is the home of most of the endemic iguana population. I you want to get to know the Bahamas wildlife better and closely, then this is the place that you should visit.
• Inagua national park is the tourists favorite. It is the home of the world’s largest breeding colony of the lovely large bright pink birds-flamingos. But, these are not the only colorful birds that you will encounter here. There are many species of parrots in this national park.

Queens staircase

The Queens staircase is a well-known landmark in Nassau, New providence Islands. Also know as the 66 steps, these 102 feet high stair are a major tourist attraction. Named after Queen Victoria  the queen of the United Kingdom, they date back to 1793. They got the name in the 19th century. if you want to get to know more about this famous landmark, it is suggested to take a tour with the gentleman that you can find at the lower entrance.

Glass window bridge

Located in the northern part of the Eleuthera Island, this place offers the most unique view. Once there was a natural rock bridge, which had been destroyed by a hurricane. Now, there is a man-made bridge that replaces the old one and offers the best sight. If you look it from a bird point of view, the Glass Window bridge lies above the line where the Atlantic ocean and Caribbean sea kiss each other. The deep blue hues and shallow turquoise waters are divided by a thin line in between and are connected by a Narrow Passage.You can’t, but preserve this  stunning wonder of the nature with a panoramic shot. This is one unique place on Mother Earth that you should not miss.

Pig beach

When you are on a holiday, you would certainly want to swim with dolphins. How about something different? Like swimming with pigs? This is one big tourist attraction in the Big Major Cay,   Exuma. The Exuma are a group of more than 365 small islands in The Bahamas that offer this unique and exciting experience. This shows to be the ideal travel destination for animal-loving wanderers. No humans live on this small island. The only inhabitants are the friendly pigs that will kindly make you company when you swim. You can bring them food, such as pitted fruits and vegetables. Whenever a boat arrives, they are happy and wait for their treat. Keep in mind that this place is only accessible by boat.

The reason why this place is inhabited with pigs is still a great mystery. No one really knows how they ended up here. There is one local legend that says pirates brought their pigs for dinner here, but never made it back. However, pigs live happily on the Pig beach.

Pink Sand Beach

If a pink beach sounds like a challenging place to be visited you can head to the Harbour Island. Located on the eastern Atlantic ocean side, it has the best beach in The Bahamas. What makes this beach so unique? The outstanding pink color of the sand. It comes from tiny microscopic coral insects, than has a pink shell. it llives under rocks, in caves, on the sea floors. The shell of dead insects is crushed by the waves, and brought up all he way to the bay. There, it mixes with the white sand and creates the specific color. This is why the sand has the wonderful pink hue.  There are only 10 beaches with pink sand in the whole world. The Bahamas are lucky to have a jewel like this.
